sqlite: database is locked
We’re using sqlite over at Snipshot, which is built in Django. If you start to see "database is locked" errors, you can override sqlite3’s 5 second timeout with this option in settings.py: DATABASE_OPTIONS = {'timeout': 15}Beau Hartshorne Tue at 9:17pm.
Social Calendar, Weekend of 11/13
There’s a lot to do this weekend – and even next week too. It’s been a while since I had a good healthy shopping spree, so I’m very excited to get paid on Friday and lighten the load on my wallet on Saturday. But most important – Fashion Feud on Tuesday! Friday A...Adelle McElveen November 12 at 7:00pm.
Best Week Ever
VH-1 has nothing on this. Last I discovered three very delightful websites that will undoubtedly become part of my daily habit. 1. Swirl – a new online sample sale site from the wonderful team at Daily Candy. ...Adelle McElveen November 9 at 1:36am.
The lion, the witch, and my wardrobe
I love dresses, but wear them relatively infrequently. I blame my closet: it absorbs every dress I buy and releases them into some abyss where, like a trip to Narnia, I can only access them by digging deep into the back of my closet. Ok, ok. ...Adelle McElveen November 4 at 12:19am.
Flower Power
If I were a superhero, I think my uniform would be in florals. I looked like a normal person in the Paris subway, but once I realized it was raining outside I whipped out my trench coat and umbrella. Too bad I was wearing canvas shoes. As it turns out, Michelle Obama also likes floral prints...Adelle McElveen October 28 at 11:58pm.
Why I Run
Sometimes it’s nice to step back and remind ourselves of why we run. The below passage is a personal account of why one runner continues to put in mile after mile each week. Running is clearly a core part of this person’s life and it’s inspiring to see other runners share the same sentiment. One ...Andy Johns October 14 at 3:35pm.
Space where there wasn't
As I mentioned I've been on a little hiatus because we recently moved into a new place. I've been busily working to get it set up and feeling like home. I'm almost there, but one thing that's proven tricky is our lack of space. We moved from a small two bedroom house to a 2 bedroom loft...Retro Audrey October 12 at 6:12pm.
Marathon Spectator Signs You Might Enjoy
Listening to spectators cheer you on during a race can be pretty entertaining. I always get a chuckle out of the “Way to go! You’re almost there!” comments at mile 15 of a marathon. The signs that spectators bring can be flat out hilarious. Belo...Andy Johns October 11 at 11:08am.
The Evolution of Running Shoes
One of the most popular commercials of all time was run by Nike. It included Spike Lee and Michael Jordan and burned the slogan “it’s gotta be the shoes” into the minds of basketball fans around the globe. It w...Andy Johns October 6 at 8:00pm.
School of Vintage
I didn’t go to the Vintage Fashion Expo because I love vintage clothing. I went as a skeptic who wasn’t quite convinced by the idea of “vintage” clothing. Skepti...Adelle McElveen October 1 at 6:02pm.
Ode to Ra'mon (or, Where's Nina? I'm bored.)
I can’t believe Ramon got Auf’d. I blame it on the fact that Nina seems to have disappeared. What happened to “Don’t Bore Nina!”? Given th...Adelle McElveen September 27 at 12:49am.
Just a Means to an End?
Joel Spolsky’s latest article inspired this post. When I was a kid I used to love logic puzzles. They were so much fun. They demanded a flash of insight coupled with really sharp thinking. Di...Justin Bishop September 25 at 11:14am.
Blowing Your Nose While Running
A commonly asked question by runners is “what do I do about a runny nose during a race? ...Andy Johns September 23 at 8:54pm.
London Calling
London Fashion week is upon us! …It has been for a few days actually (I have 44 shows to catch up on). London isn’t known for being a heavy-hitter of fashion shows, but more for being the rowdy, rebellious one of the bunch (the bunch being New York, Milan and Paris). In...Adelle McElveen September 23 at 12:23am.
10 Things to Avoid Doing the Day Before a Marathon
Months of meticulous preparation for a race can all be a wash if you make a few pre-race blunders the day before the event. Below is a list of the top 10 things you want to avoid doing in the final 24 hours leading up to your marathon. 1...Andy Johns September 21 at 9:52pm.
NYFW / DIY Lookbooks
For online coverage of Fashion Week my favorite site is at New York Magazine. They have a large section devoted to fashion with lots of cool interactive features, and an up-to-the-minute blog (the Cut) for all things fashion news. Their slideshow feature is the best I’ve seen so far. ...Adelle McElveen September 19 at 9:21am.
Social Calendar, Week of 9/13
Fashion Week is happening in New York City (more on that later!), but it’s a busy week in San Francisco too. Here’s what’s up: Tues: Leaf & Petal – Three Dot Trunk show; call 650 329 8070 or check out their Facebook page for the deets. (Palo ...Adelle McElveen September 14 at 9:41pm.
And the winner is...
After much thought I decided that a striped bag was simple enough travel well, but that the bold colors added the right amount of pizzazz. I also liked how the lines weren’t sharp but bled a little bit, almost like a watercolor painting. ...Adelle McElveen September 12 at 10:01am.
In the fitting room with... the romper!
Searching for “romper” in Google, I wasn’t sure if I would find mostly results for children’s wear, or if the romper craze had permeated the search engine. Baby rompers were the 8th listing down – looks like adult rompers have taken over. (Can we call them something else? Calling ...Adelle McElveen September 9 at 7:28pm.
Prints Charming
Thanks to the book I’m currently reading (The House Dress: A Story of Eroticsm and Fashion) I’ve learned that using printed fabric used to be regarded as a lesser alternative to traditional clothing. It’s much harder to notice seams and stitches beneath a print, so it could be used to disgui...Adelle McElveen September 2 at 11:51pm.
